Pushing Hands Self Defense

  • Single & Double Push Hands Workshop

6-9 pm on Friday, May 16th, examine the martial cycles of pushing hands.

Tai Chi Chuan, an internal martial and healing art, develops inner power and strength using a training drill called Pushing Hands. Gain and develop coordination, balance, and timing by Pushing Hands. Learn to interact with sensitivity, grace, and power!

Pushing Hands using Pressure the Old Way. The way of Old Yang’s Tai Chi Chuan: use pressure to wring awareness into spines and squeeze weakness out of arms. Get “attacked” by someone who pushes using pressure. Watch your self-defense skills evolve into easy, powerful, quaking, shaking attack-counter-attacks: Fa-Jing!

These methods are great for developing relaxation and intention, good for:

  • Reflex development for all martial arts — grappling, karate, kickboxing, wing chun, more.
  • Core strength coordination for all movement arts — dance, pilates, yoga, all.
  • Relaxation and sensation for everyone — me, you, everyone.

We utilize the methods and teachings from the World Taiji Boxing Association. These abstract and repetitive processes build competence into our reflex-response systems and develop confidence in our bodies and minds. When we learn, deep down, that we can cope with stress and violence using reflexive methods, we naturally enrich our capacity for compassion, calm, and kindness.

What will we do?

Pushing hands, done well, helps us discover self-defense. The more cycles we pursue, using the proper methods, the deeper and faster our reflex becomes. It’s intense work and it’s delightful training.

    If this year’s push hands workshop is anything like last year’s, it ought to be killer! If you want your push hands to go deeper, you can’t miss this one!

    Just as I foresaw, this year’s workshop was killer! We progressed through the different movements involved in double push hands and before we knew we were fitting all the pieces together. Even practitioners with no double push hands experience were able to “get it.” Once we had that, we were taught some strikes and soon we were getting a taste of combative double push hands! Throw into the mix some square and small circle double push hands, and, damn, we were all sweating! Thanks Steven for another great workshop and an awesome workout to boot!
